Running Music
One of the most difficult things about running is focusing on something other than the physical pain the sport puts the body through. Perhaps nothing is as effective at doing this as music. When running without music it can be difficult to think of anything other than the actual physical ramifications of running itself, particularly for runners on a treadmill or track. However, when running to music it is easy to forget about the difficult task at hand, and get lost in the lyrics or instrumentation of the song. Aside from alleviating the arduous nature of running, music can also be used to motivate runners to move faster. Most music is inspirational by nature, and can be extremely effective in getting runners pumped up about their sport.
Of course, the genre of music used by runners plays a huge part in how effective it is. As a general rule of thumb it's better to listen to music with a fast tempo, as it makes a runner's legs move faster sub-consciously. Many different genres offer faster tempo songs, and it should be left up to the runner to choose the type of music that motivates them most, whether it's punk rock, hip hop, or jazz. Although faster music is ideal, slower music can also be effective if it's used to set the mood for an athlete running through scenic landscape that isn't necessarily concerned with their speed. Running is great exercise, and music just makes it all the more enjoyable.
